Elitism: Part 3

This set of anti-Palin talking points contrasts Palin with Obama on, among other things, educational background: University of Idaho vs. Harvard Law School.

I will readily agree that the latter is a better institution, and that other things being equal you'd expect a Harvard alumnus to do more impressive work. But the bigger you assume the difference is, the more of an elitism trap you're falling into. Don't turn college credentials into a pedigree.

What Other People Say

Don't turn college credentials into a pedigree.

Likewise, one shouldn't turn a pedigree into college credentials: it was George W. Bush's pedigree that got him into Yale.

These talking points should have included some more details in the section comparing education, if only because Bush's Yale degree and Harvard MBA make him look at least as good as Obama. Palin doesn't seem to have distinguished herself academically (or politically or journalistically) at the University of Idaho. Obama was president of the Harvard Law Review.

Of course, if you don't turn college credentials into a pedigree, then you dont have to worry if people are turning a pedigree into college credentials.

The opposite is, of course, true as well, but then you still have the problem judging 50-, 60-, 70-year olds based on their age-20 performances.
