Hillary Schadenfreude

Mickey Kaus is all over it.

Drivers licenses for illegals actually isn't an issue that concerns me much (if you're running for federal office, the decisions of a state governor aren't always relevant) but I have to agree with Mickey that how she reacts to things doesn't bode well for what kind of president she'd be.

(The catch-22 is that so much of what she's doing wrong is a stereotypically female way to do things wrong. Note the full meaning of "stereotypically": She's not doing what actual women would necessarily do, just what caricatures of women would do. Playing the gender card is, ironically, an example of that difference. Some people assume victim status more than others: compare to Elizabeth Dole, Olympia Snowe, even Pelosi.)

What Other People Say

Question: what specifically did she do that is a caricature of what women do? Beyond "she played the gender card."

The coverage of what she has or hasn't done has been driven by what Obama and Edwards have said in response, and it seems to be more a caricature of how women are treated than a reflection on what she actually said or did following the debate. That's fine, because this is how campaigns play out, and there was a lot of pent-up Democratic frustration at her. However, she's no more the author of this narrative than George H.W. Bush was the author of the supermarket scanner story.

Also, I get what you're trying to say about Olympia Snowe and Pelosi, but Liddy Dole has become such a caricature of a woman that she wouldn't look out of place handing out flyers on Commercial St. in Provincetown.

Good question. The only thing she in particular seems to have done is answer questions. (I have to admit most of this post germinated from Kaus's November 2 entry, in which he insinuates suboptimal behavior by her campaign team but doesn't specifically say what they did to keep the issue alive.)

A more justifiable assertion might be that people like Howard Kurtz, and like her own husband, are treating her like a woman of caricature.
