Name That Presidential Candidate: #7

By the way, I'm thinking of going through an entire sequence of clues for each candidate regardless of when it's gotten in the comments.

His alma maters include Bethany Nazarene College (in Oklahoma) and Yale Divinity School. To a surprising degree, he's responsible for the primary/caucus system as we know it. He was campaign manager for a candidate who successfully targeted the Iowa caucuses, and when he announced his own presidential run several years later, he began canvasing New Hampshire in September of the previous year.

(Nowadays this is common; then it was a novelty.)

His personal web site describes himself as "A Renaissance man of new ideas." The phrase "new ideas" was a big part of his first presidential campaign, in which he won New Hampshire by 10 points and over subsequent primaries went down to the wire against a more established opponent.

His second campaign was far less successful than his first. When rumors circulated that he was having an affair, he told reporters: "Follow me around. I don't care. I'm serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They'll be very bored."

They did follow him; they weren't bored.

What Other People Say

Hmm...I'll guess Pat Robertson.

It's not Pete DuPont, is it? The "new ideas" thing strikes a chord.

On the Yale Divinity School idea, I would be thinking Gary Hart, but I confess the rest of the clues don't help me decide whether or not to buzz in.

I may as well take a shot with Pat Buchanan. Not to be confused with At Buchanan *or* Lamar Alexander #2.

Now I'm curious to know where MB would go from sit to buzz.

Gary Hart went to divinity school? As Bart Simpson would say, the ironing is delicious.

"Colorado"?

Also, I don't know why you couldn't have just said "George McGovern" right out in the second clue.

Gary Hart is another person who will be speaking at the Cody's on Telegraph. He'll be discussing his book, "God and Caesar in America: An Essay on Religion and Politics," on Saturday. The blurb in the "East Bay Express" mentions that he grew up in the Church of the Nazarene and went to Yale Divinity School.

Jerry Brown was in a Jesuit seminary for a while, if I recall correctly.
