TRASH Regionals

This post says discussion is now okay; I'll tentatively trust 'em.

A week ago I wrote up (but left in draft mode) a post with the list of all the tossup answers I'd gotten (or negged), as inspired by Cooch doing the same thing a year or two ago. Revisiting that post now it feels too much like an ego trip. My negs, however, are after the fold.

For what it's worth, over 20% of the tossups I got right were about baseball. Not just sports, but baseball specifically. (Paul beat me to Bud Selig but I think that's the only one I didn't get.)

Also, at least four of my correct tossup answers were names of corporations. While these are fine questions, I'm not entirely convinced that knowing that a Minnesota native named Dayton started Target or that Arthur Blank owns Home Depot (known via his owning the Falcons) is "trashy."

Right: Killer Uno
Wrong: Uno [prompt] [...]

Right: Fiesta Bowl
Wrong: Holiday Bowl

Right: Frozone
Wrong: [...] (blanked on his name - early buzz on the right track, too, so frustrating)

Right: Moana Pozzi
Wrong: Cicciolina

Right: Don't Phunk With My Heart
Wrong: Brimful of Asha

Right: Temple
Wrong: Rutgers (buzzed twice on college football tossups, negged both)

Right: The Bleachers
Wrong: Tuesdays With Morrie

Right: MK-Ultra
Wrong: Operation Mongoose

What Other People Say

I was careful enough not to go in with the wrong Italian porn actress, although since I only knew one name (Cicciolina -- and I don't think she's even Italian), I was kinda hosed on that one.

Rutgers was said in our room as well. Hah, suckers! I'll get this one for sure on the giveaway. Uhh...or not.

As for Fiesta Bowl -- having a teammate whose mother apparently still talks about the big PSU victory over USC makes that one a less likely get for me. Had it in the verbal queue, but felt no need to go in right then.

My best neg -- was it just me, or didn't the intro to Mission: Space sounded a lot like the description of the Michael Vick Experience. :)

In the rooms where I read Killer Uno and Temple were negged in very similar fashion. Mentioning the Garden State Bowl was a definite trigger for Rutgers, which is understandable with the combo of crappy football and New Jersey.

Consumer/corporation stuff isn't trashy like pro wrestling is trashy, I suppose. Maybe if these questions focused more on wrongdoings and lawsuits by aggreived former employees...

I idly wonder how many of the younger quiz-oriented readers of this blog know of the John Edwards* trash maxim:

General knowledge is Doonesbury; trash is Rex Morgan, M.D.

I suppose corporations aren't a priori more or less trashy than sports or movies. Maybe a smidge less trashy than comic strips, but even so. On second thought, I shouldn't worry about how trashy they are so much as wonder whether they were heavily represented in this year's set (or if I just happened to nail most of the ones they did ask about).

*- John Edwards the U of Chicago redhead, not the 18th century preacher or 2004 presidential candidate.

someone on our team did the Rutgers for Temple neg too. What made you go from Tuesdays with Morrie on that q? Couldn't be as bad as my neg of Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis for Harding & Kerigan, or of Steve Carrell for Steve Colbert.

The room I read in had a quick correct buzz on Temple, while in the category of "gloriously wrong" answers heard...

Right: Springfield (Simpsons)
Wrong: The Shakers
