This isn't even a political story, aside from the extent to which it reveals that many (not all, not even most, but many) people in charge of public schools have idiotic judgment. These are the people who give the "Those who can't do..." cliche some traction.
In the world of conservative cable news, my guess is that the ban on wearing red, white, and blue is an evil liberal conspiracy. That's problematic, as we really shouldn't infer evil motives from mere gross stupidity.

Obvious flaw with the "gang related" theory - why would you wear red and blue?
My theory is that the administration is applying zero tolerance to everything in the hopes of not getting sued. Whoops.
