Were The Amazon Shorts Really That Bad?

I heard about them, never watched 'em, but Slate pans them. Could they possibly have been as bad as those animated Sports Guy features?

Speaking of things that may or may not be as bad as those animated Sports Guy features, who among you has seen "Home Movies"? I gave the first episode a good ten minutes before my opinion was set; should I have been more patient? Was I just in a bad mood? Are all the original-material Adult Swim shows (Family Guy excepted) really that... special... for lack of a better word?

UPDATE: On further review of the Slate piece I linked to, she mentions (somewhat favorably) those BMW films. Last summer Julia and I had a houseguest (an adult) who absolutely raved about these and felt strongly that we watch them. I don't think she and I agreed about their quality or artistic merit.

What Other People Say

I didn't watch any of the Amazon films, but they did seem to affect site performance, and I can't figure out what sort of f*cknuts exec would think adding something to slow down an internet sales site during the holiday season was a good idea.

I have never been disappointed in a Home Movies episode, but : I've not watched them in order
Squigglevision is a PITA, the later Flash episodes are much easier to watch.

Of season 1, "School Nurse", We'll Always Have Tuesday" and "It was supposed to be funny" are the two I remember seeing.

Then again, I think Family Guy is absolute crap, so YMMwildlyV.

Between Family Guy, the "Behind the Laughter" episode, and well-trod political ground, Greg is there anything we agree on? And yet you're one of my favorite people. Hmm, maybe this is even a because-of rather than a despite.

I really liked the one BMW film I saw, but I never got around to watching the rest. Of course, I also really loved the car chase in _Ronin_, so it's no big surprise I would like those.

(BTW: Face it, you're just wrong about "Behind the Laughter".)

Very very wrong on Behind the Laughter.

Home Movies is fantastic as well - earlier episodes were weaker since they focused more on the mom (then voiced by Paula Poundstone, who was hilarious in the one where she goes to the parent-teacher conference) but later episodes focused more on McGuirk and improved greatly.

The ep from Season 1 where they film a rock opera based on Kafka's Metamorphoses was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV.

I liked the BMW shorts, but that was in part because they read like good short stories, either with a twist ending or a good premise. Plus, Don Cheadle and James Brown figured prominently in them, which made them very likeable in my mind.
