Corporate Darwinism

"Let them fail," Virginia Postrel says of US Airways.

Couldn't agree more.

What Other People Say

This was basically the final middle finger shot at management by the people who are about to be cut from the Pittsburgh operations. USAir cut Pittsburgh from hub level about two months back, and pretty much everybody realizes this was their last chance to send any message. Pittsburgh is going from USAir's main hub, to little more than a third-tier city for USAir's codeshare partners. We're probably talking about 5,000 jobs about to go, minimum. (Before somebody says some other carrier will come in, USAir's one resource is an iron hold on the gate rights at Pittsburgh International. The county basically conceded everything to them when they built the new airport(1990's) to keep them from leaving then. I'm convinced the only way that gets broken is USAir dying.)

Yes, this was spite, and we may not like it, but we certainly can understand it.

The irony of the whole thing is the effectiveness with which this might go. And if this breaks USAir, all the people about to be fired will suddenly have an opportunity.
